The Republic of Karelia


Karelia is situated in the northwestern part of Russia not far from st Petersburg; its population is 783 thousand people, the capital – Petrozavodsk (280 thousand people). It has very beneficial geographical location for the development of various contacts.

In the north-east the Republic is washed by the White Sea (the length of the shoreline is more than 630 km), in the west it borders on Finland (total length of the border with European Union 720 km or 450 miles), in the north – on Murmansk region, in the east – on Archangelsk region, in the south – on Vologda and Leningrad regions of the Russian Federation. Through the system of rivers, lakes and canals the republic has exit to Barents, Baltic, Black, Caspian Seas and the World Ocean.

In 1994 regular passenger air service  Helsinki-Ioensuu-Petrozavodsk was opened, served by the Finnish Air Company "FINNAIR". Karelia is positioning itself on the world marker as the link between west and east of Europe.
